Egalite Except When It Means My Job
Nothing will get a bunch of French people out on a Sunday day off than a good protest/riot against laws that make them work. Actually they are protesting laws that were passed in order to help employers take a chance on hiring young workers. The French employment laws are so strict that no one can be fired after being hired. So employers have a lot at stake when they risk hiring anyone. We all know the first-time employees are not the most reliable, competent or productive workers. Thus, employers choose machines, people they know or off-shoring jobs to avoid this employee-for-life vice.
With French unemployment at 10% nationally, 25% for the 18-25 age group and around 50% for Muslims, Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin is trying to free employers and maybe address this unemployment morass. But the students, unions and socialists will not hear of these changes.
These riots are becoming violent as they send the message to their Muslim population that the French are all for multi-culturalism except when it means jobs and egalite.
