Tom Never Said It
Andrew Skip March comments on the new Democrat rally cry "Dissent is patriotic" recently cited by John Kerry on Meet The Press. This quote is bravely attributed by the Democrats to Thomas Jefferson. Like so many other liberal quips, their attribution to Thomas Jefferson is a lie, the great Virginian never said it (and likely would have a word or 100 to debate that assertion) per Mark Steyn.
I was having a "discussion" one day with an individual who was pontificating on how the United States has become less democratic and quoting some statistics that must have come from the Peruvian Shining Path Communist Party or some such organization. Of course I took issue with her and cited recent voter turn out stats, the rise of talk radio, etc. I noticed that she was wearing a pin that stated "Dissent is patriotic". I was going to raise issue with this as well as it has often occured to me that dissent is dissent. It may be patriotic and it may be unpatriotic. The level to which it is well informed dissent is important as Mark Steyn points out. I decided not to take this further as her idea of fact based analysis and reporting is a Michael Moore film. Anyway that discussion and subsequent discussions as well with people who have opinions with little foundation or reflection have typically been from the Left. It is also noteworthy that conservative talk radio has grown out of dissent and is typically more informed and seeks to make a substantive argument as opposed to the Leftist bombast from the floundering "Air America" and its ilk.
