Americans Says Gov't Is The Problem

For anyone depressed over the state of the electorate, here is a headline and story to make you feel a lot better about our fellow citizens:

Poll: Majority believes government doing too much

The article stated the following:

Queried about their views on the role of government, 54 percent of the 1,013 adults polled said they thought it was trying to do too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses. Only 37 percent said they thought the government should do more to solve the country's problems.

This is better news than who is defeating whom. Of course, it is a poll and we shall see what grade the pollsters are going to earn in a little over a week. Right, Speaker Pelosi?

YOu can't imagine how happy that poll makes me.

Now the Democrats have a choice. Do they continue their big government policies, or do they become the party of small government?

It's actually not as farfetched as it seems. You can have a generous, but inexpensive, safety net. Many good social programs are dirt cheap(like Head Start).

It is conceivable that over the next two years the Democrats could cut spending AND achieve some longtime Democratic goals in the process.

No doubt a smart politician will go with this public sentiment. The current antipathy with the Republicans is that they mouth small govt but voted in the massive entitlements like the drug programs (with no veto from Bush). The anger is against their hypocrisy. Hopefully the Michael Steeles of the party will usher in actions backing the rhetoric of reducing govt.

But, my faith in the Democrats becoming "small government" minded is not as great as yours. Especially if you read the party platform as announced by Pelosi. Start with minimum wages. That is far from letting the market decide things. Then there is the concerted effort to attack anyone proposing private retirement accounts in lieu of social security.

I don't necessarily believe the Democrats will embrace small government. I just think it's possible in light of current conditions. They don't really have any place to go with liberalism except for a few popular planks, like raising minimum wage. And even after the increase, minimum wage will still be less of a burden on employers than it was in say, 1960. That's a victory of sorts.
